Q1 LESSON 3 - PARTS OF THE COMPUTER
PARTS OF THE COMPUTER
1. MOUSE - a handheld hardware input device that controls a cursor in a GUI (Graphical User Interface) and can move and select text, icons, files, and folders on your computer.
2. KEYBOARD - one of the primary input devices with a computer. Similar to an electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of buttons that create letters, numbers, and symbols as well as perform other function.
3. MICROPHONE - a hardware peripheral and input device originally invented by Emile Berliner in 1877. It allows computer user to input audio into their computers.
4. WEBCAM - a camera that connects to a computer. It captures either still pictures or motion video, and with the aid of software, it can transmit its video on the internet in real-time.
5. SCANNER - a device optically "read" image and converts it into a digital signal.
6. MONITOR - output device that displays video images and text. Is made up of circuity, a screen, a power supply, buttons to adjust screen setting and casing that holds all of these components.
7. EARPHONES - a device that either plug into a computer line out or speakers.
8. PRINTER - an external hardware that takes the electronic data stored on a computer or other device and generates a hard copy of it.
9. PROJECTOR - take images generated by a computer or Blu-ray player and reproduce them by projection onto a small screen, wall, or another surface.
10. SPEAKER - connects to a computer to generate sound. The signal used to reproduce the sounds that comes from a computer speaker by the computer's sound card.
11. CPU (Central Processing Unit) - handle all the instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer.
12. GPU (Graphics processing Unit) - an electric circuit used to speed up the creation of both 2D and 3D images.
13. FLASH MEMORY DEVICES - an integrated circuit that does not need continuous power to retain data but is a bit more expensive that magnetic storage.
14. OPTICAL DRIVE - refers to a computer system that allows user to use CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray optical drives.
15. HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD) - an electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic, storage and one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material.
16. MOTHERBOARD - serves as a single platform to connect all of the parts of a computer together. Connects the CPU, memory, hard drives, optical drives, video cards, sound card, and other parts of expansion cards directly or via cables.
17. MEMORY - primary memory which hold all the programs and data the processor is using at a given time.
18. POWER SUPPLY UNIT - a device that supplies power to your personal computer.
19. EXPANSION CARDS - used to give a computer additional capabilities, such as enhanced video performance via a graphic card.
20. VIDEO CARD - a hardware component whose main function is to generates and display the output images to a computer monitor.
